If only! 2

 Wednesday, Dec. 3

The Iranian navy and air force began a six-day maneuver of marine and air might which Tehran radio said would cover an area of 50,000 square miles of the Persian Gulf, the Sea of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran has threatened to block the narrow strait if attacked.

Admiral Qasem Rostamabadi said its aim is to "increase the level of readiness of Iran’s naval forces and test domestically-made naval weaponry."

DEBKAfile reports Tehran is utterly convinced a US and/or Israeli attack is impending against its nuclear sites.

What you say, roger of florida, makes sense. It’s a frightening prospect.

I have felt for some time that Iran is engaged in a huge deception regarding it’s nuclear program, and this exercise reinforces my theory. I believe that Iran is only making noises about destroying Israel to distract attention from their real aims. These aims are to colonise all the Persian Gulf States, starting with Iraq into a new “Ottaman” like empire, but run by Persians. To do this they absolutely have to be able to prevent a US Navy task force approaching the Gulf from the Indian ocean, the only way to do this is to be able to deploy nuclear weapons against such a task force. This is not fantasy, while the nuclear option has been largely disregarded for use in a land battle, except in last resort, nuclear weapons have been an integral part of naval warfare planning for years. Would a President Obama retaliate with nuclear weapons against land targets in Iran if, for instance, the Iranians destroyed an aircraft carrier battle group in the Indian Ocean? Perhaps, but more likely not, actually the threat from Iran would be enough to dissuade most American Presidents from intervening.
Incidentally the Iranians certainly do want to destroy Israel but are rational enough to know that with a little more time other factors such as internal Israeli demograhics and the growth of power for Iranian proxies in Lebanon, Syria and the palestinian groups will achieve their desired end without certain MAD. If Iran attacks Israel with nuclear weapons they know their own destruction is assured.
Consider this; if Saudi Arabia really thought that Iran only wanted nuclear weapons to use against Israel, they would be funding Iran, as it is they are trying to get nuclear weapons themselves; why?
DEBKA may be right about Iranian fears, from their point of view this is their vulnerable time, they have not yet got the capability to deter, once they have a deliverable nuclear weapon they will be, not invulnerable, but certainly much stronger. I believe they vastly overestimate American resolve, having chased the US out of Iraq. Israel is their big fear and they have countered that threat to some extent by manipulation of American politics.
