Dying Britain 4

Great Britain, as we’ve said before, is slowly and steadily committing suicide. John Hinderaker notices, with some surprise it seems, that maybe it is (self-) doomed. He puts together two recent stories from Britain which together tell a third – of that once great country’s sickness unto death.

From PowerLine:

An Islamist fanatic plotted to snatch a British Muslim soldier from the streets and film him being beheaded “like a pig” in a lock-up garage, a court heard.

Parviz Khan, 37, built up a terrorist cell in Birmingham and planned to kidnap the soldier before filming his “ghastly” death for release to the media. The attack was designed to cause “panic and fear” amongst the Army and the wider British public. …

“He decided to kidnap such a soldier with the help of drug dealers in Birmingham. The soldier would be approached in the Broad Street nightlife area, lured into a car and taken to a lock-up garage and murdered with his head cut off – ‘like a pig’.

“This atrocity would be filmed. They would have the soldier’s military card to prove who he was.”

The court heard that the film would be released through Khan’s terrorist network to the Al Jazeera TV station.

That’s the threat, or part of it, anyway. Then we have this story, on the same day:

Myleene Klass, the broadcaster and model, brandished a knife at youths who broke into her garden – but has been warned by police that she may have acted illegally.

Miss Klass, a model for Marks & Spencer and a former singer with the pop group Hear’Say, was in her kitchen in the early hours of Friday when she saw two teenagers behaving suspiciously in her garden. The youths approached the kitchen window, before attempting to break into her garden shed, prompting Miss Klass to wave a kitchen knife to scare them away.

Miss Klass, 31, who was alone in her house in Potters Bar, Herts, with her two-year-old daughter, Ava, called the police. When they arrived at her house they informed her that she should not have used a knife to scare off the youths because carrying an “offensive weapon” – even in her own home – was illegal.

This is just one of many similar recent stories, some involving criminal charges that have been brought against homeowners who tried to defend themselves against murderous thugs who invaded their homes. In England, astonishing as it may seem, self-defense is illegal.

Am I missing something, or is Great Britain doomed?

Where is Maggie Thatcher when we need her? She was like a few years of hope that British people developed a backbone. Now Britian returned to their road to wimpishness.

It defies the imagination the current climate in the UK regarding self defense. There was a big move to disarm the populace after the Dunblane massacre (although there were already severe limits on firearm ownership before that). I don't know why no one is putting two and two together with their rising crime rate (including gun crimes!) and a population of disarmed victims. There was a story out a while ago about a guy in England who found a gun on his property, reported it and brought it to the police station. They threw him in jail for possesion of an illegal weapon!

OTOH, in the US, we have probably an unprecedented level of gun ownership by law abiding citizens, especially the Barak Obama driven surge in military style semi-auto rifles and high capacity handguns. The FBI crime stats that just came out show a precipitous drop in crime. Funny thing, the Brady Bunch seems pretty quiet about that. Not to mention low crime in Switzerland and Israel where they have high levels of gun possession by law abiding citizens.

    • philabor, and everyone else who's interested – the story you mention 'about a guy in England who found a gun on his property …' is here on this website:

Your point about where there is high gun ownership by the people there is less crime is a very good one. Governments must know it too, but the kind of government that wants to control the population – as socialist governments do – are less afraid of crime than they are of popular resistance to their tyranny. That's the real real reason they want to prohibit gun ownership, wouldn't you say?

Absolutely. I see 3 absolute reasons and 2 benefits of the Second Amendment:
        Reasons:
        First of all, Resist Tyranny
        Foreign Invasion
        Self defense
        Benefits:
        Hunting
        Sport

Also, what does “shall not be infringed” mean? As I see it, anything that even restricts the edges of this right is unconstitutional. Like bans on full auto. Like background checks. Do I believe we'd be better off allowing felons and the mentally ill to legally possess guns? Probably not, but I think the Federal Government is way over the line on infringing this right.

Which brings up another point: what's with the interstate commerce clause? The states should be regulating the keeping and bearing of arms if anybody is. How does interstate commerce cover a gun ban in schools, other than by some contorted logic? How does it cover a gun I buy in a store in my home state? Now if I drive across a state line to Chicago with a trunk full of Glocks to sell, that's Federal.

We need to get our country back. Hopefully in 2010, before the dems do too much damage with their healthcare giveaway and cap and tax.
