Christian arrogance, intolerance, hate, and violence 15

– Just a small selection of examples, thoughts for the day:

Pat Buchanan: “Our culture is superior because our religion is Christianity and that is the truth that makes men free.” – Speech to the Christian Coalition, September 1993

Jerry Falwell: “If we are going to save America and evangelize the world, we cannot accommodate secular philosophies that are diametrically opposed to Christian truth.” – Moral Majority Report, September, 1984.

Gary North: “So let us be blunt about it: We must use the doctrine of religious liberty to gain independence for Christian schools until we train up a generation of people who know that there is no religious neutrality, no neutral law, no neutral education, and no neutral civil government. Then they will be get busy in constructing a Bible-based social, political and religious order which finally denies the religious liberty of the enemies of God.” – The Intellectual Schizophrenia of the New Christian Right in Christianity and Civilization: The Failure of the American Baptist Culture, No. 1 (Spring, 1982), p. 25.

Randall Terry: “I want you just to let a wave of intolerance wash over you. I want you to let a wave of hatred wash over you. Yes, hate is good… Our goal is a Christian nation. We have a biblical duty, we are called on by God to conquer this country.” – The News Sentinel, (Fort Wayne, Indiana), August 16, 1993.

Jesus of Nazareth: “If any one comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.” –The Gospel According to Luke, 14:26

“He is clad in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. From his mouth issues a sharp sword with which to smite the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron; he will tread the wine press of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has a name inscribed, King of kings and Lord of lords. Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and with a loud voice he called to all the birds that fly in midheaven, ‘Come, gather for the great supper of God, to eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all men, both free and slave, both small and great.’ And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies gathered to make war against him who sits upon the horse and against his army. And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who in its presence had worked the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshipped its image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with brimstone. And the rest were slain by the sword of him who sits upon the horse, the sword that issues from his mouth; and all the birds were gorged with their flesh.” – The Revelation to John, 19:13-21

This is the problem I have with the crop of right-wing conservative Christian politicians .   We have the violent Muslims pushing sharia law on one hand  and the Christian fundamentalists vying for power in the political arena on the other hand. So now we’re caught between a rock and a hard place trying to decide between a left-wing liberal socialist neo-Mariist Obama or a right-wing Bible-thumping “born again” Christian zealot.    If I had to make a definate choice I would rather have a conservative Christian than a Muslim or neo-Marxist  ( even though I would actually not want either ).  I would just hope that the conservative Christian wouldn’t use his political office to push his/her Christian agenda on all of us , but we know that is exactly what he/she would do .  So who do we choose ?

  • George

I did very extensive research on the tyrants and dictators of this past century and most people would be shocked on how they have been lied to and hoodwinked. I researched historical data from rare archives , rare books, and research information which has been censored from mainstream society and by the mainstream media. People who report on this today are considered to be revisionists while the true revisionists rewrote the original true history in the first place and want to silence those of us presenting the actual historical facts.  To do this , they engage in personal attacks, villification, name calling and ad hominem attacks in order to silence the messenger to keep the true message from getting out to the general populace.  It’s another form of control and as a result , these individuals use a tactic of calling others what they are. It’s all an orchestrated scheme and a power play for power and control.
I will have to condense it as much as possible so as not to get very lengthy in order to make it as brief as possible to give you an idea.   I’ll get back with you later on the matter.  The Christians in America know they are in the majority and in control of our government and mass media. They are NOT going to just roll over and relinquish all this to secularists .    The prolonging of Christianity allows them to keep other groups of people in control or ( “in their place” ) as they achieve massive amounts of wealth and power. To do so  they have to have a mechanism to maintain their control & power and religion ( particularly Christianity ) does just that. Many of these individuals who pretend to be so religious doen’t even believe this bullcrap themselves but pretend to do so to keep others under their feet and to keep their powerbase.   As a result , they have attained fame & fortune and are raking in more perpetually. They will stop at nothing to continue their power-mechanism (religion) to keep the masses ignorant, obedient , and loyal.  The people are being played as pawns in a game and they ( the people ) don’t even know they are being used as “useful idiots” but they actually believe they are so enlightened. The Christians have been indoctrinated since babies literally with this theological belief system  and it was forced-fed upon them and is now deeply ingrained in their minds. All their life , they only know Christianity, the Lord, Jesus, The savior, ad nauseum, so when you and I come along and challenge their hardcore indoctrinated belief, we are looked upon as being evil , immoral and a threat . The typical kneejerk response is to attack what is perceived as being “the threat” . Take a guess who or what that is ?  It’s secularism and/or atheists . While they are logical in the sense of politics and social matters , their indoctrination has been so strong and successful , that they actually CAN’T separate the two and have been brainwashed to believe that the two go together. They havent been taught to think of the two being apart but have mixed their Christian religious beliefs with the political and social aspects of their lives. I can go on and on , but I’ll explain more later.  This is why they feel compelled to attack anyone and everyone who may jeopardize their control over the people and also what they actually  have been indoctrinated all their lives to accept and believe.  They are simply acting out their staunch hardcore indoctrination that has become a part of them and which has enshrouded them both mentally and socially as well as politically. The indoctrination has essentially taken a stranglehold on their minds and behaviors.  Gotta run right now and meet a new lady friend ( I always make typos when I rush, ha ha ).  I’ll see where it goes from here,  and I’ll get with you later regarding that info.

Read the above quotes by Jerry Falwell and Randall Terry and you will see that Christianity and Islam IMHO run  sibe by side and neck & neck. The only difference today  is that currently the Muslims are the ones that are engaging in naked violence and terror around the world which was a throne that was previously held by Christians in past times. If you read the statements above by Jerry Falwell  and Randall Terry , you will see that it represents the Christian versian of Sharia Law and jihad.

    • This has always mystified me, how conservatives are typically so religious (with Christianity).  I am a conservative AND an atheist because I think of things logically.

To me, many of the idealistic utopian values of the liberal left are just simply unsustainable, so it’s just more logical to be conservative (for most issues).  Likewise, I have never seen any logical evidence that there is a god, and therefore I am an atheist.  Why are most conservatives so quick to refer to the term “logic” when referring to politics, but then toss logic out the window for religious belief?

I read a really cool/fun book by Neal Boortz recently called “The Terrible Truth About Liberals.”  It’s a small, easy read that most of us will agree with whole-heartedly… until the very last chapter, where he advocates “faith.”  Being a Libertarian, he doesn’t care what you believe in, but thinks that faith in something is important.  I really wish he would have just left that last part out!

Also, George and Scrims2, I agree with you about how Christianity and Islam are really not that far apart.  The thing that bothers me the most about the typical right-wing talking points is that it basically boils down to “us vs. them.”  Our religion is better than theirs.  Uhhh… isn’t that how so many wars of the past had started?

As far as I’m concerned, the only people that should criticize [any] religion are atheists.  Otherwise you are just following a different flavor of the same BS.  Who is to say Christianity is “correct” while Islam is a joke?  The guy in Saudi Arabia (or Syria, Jordan, etc.) is saying the same thing, vice versa.  I mean seriously, they are BOTH a joke!  They’re just two different jokes!

I’ve had a thought brewing in my head I’d like to share with you all:

Should a God exist over such a vast and majestic universe as ours, I find it probable that not only would his Christian depiction fail to give the being any descriptive justice whatsoever, but also the powers of such a being would be so vast that it could easily dupe any postmortem Christian into actually thinking he is going to Heaven and communing with what he believes to be God. But the devil is in the details, for this Christian could spend several eternities with his false God and false Heaven reveling in the torture of those not-actually-heathens who went to false Hell, all without knowing that the real God is lurking behind the scenes waiting for the perfect moment to dispel the great illusion.

I mention Christianity by way of the post of this theme, but nothing limits this being to creating an Islamic/Jewish heaven, a Hindu reincarnation feedback loop, etc. In fact I surmise that is exactly what such a being would do in the face of such hopelessly naive creations. While recognizing that the “motivations” of any such being are far too inscrutable to be worthy of personification, what do you imagine this prankster programmer would have in store for our own particular brand of heathen? (My guess is nothing in particular.)

I was checking the internet to see if we atheists had  a word for us regarding the anti-atheist bigotry and anti-secular bigotry that  permeates our society.  Well, we do.  I saw the word SECULARPHOBIA  which is what Pat Condell was speaking on . That term was listed a few times on the internet but the best one of all was the term  ATHEOPHOBIA .  There is also a website titled—-  No More Atheophobia.       Also , there is a website ———————————–                 If you get a chance , check out the articles on the right side of the webpage to click on .  Nice information for you there that will be really helpfull to take on the religious zealots out there.    There is also a term I saw on the internet about   [religious idiots]   called   “religiots”  .   Check it out .

  • Scrims2

I have to say I am really wierded out by that Gary North statement. If you take out the words “Christian” and “Bible”, and substitute “Muslim” and “Koran”, you would think you were listening to a member of CAIR or something!  That is exactly the same agenda that the Muslims invading our country have. Yes, how ironic that the same people can advocate freedom and independence.

    • George

The militant Christian proselytizers  in the above article in my opinion are promoting their own version of Christian Sharia Law upon America and with their world wide missionaries , are pushing  their Christian beliefs  globally.  In essence , you have intollerant people calling other people intollerant. Their double-standard hypocricy and arrogance precedes them.  It’s like the old saying of — ” The pot calling the kettle black”  , or in my case (snicker)  to be humorous — ” Like the snow calling the milk white”  just for the sake of equality (smile) !

      • Macnvettes

The same “christians” who rail against sharia law and “advocate for freedom” are the ones that defend denying homosexuals the right to marry, advocate for prohibition laws (no liquor on sunday or after midnight), defend putting the 10 commandments in courtrooms, and the word “god” in our pledge and on our currency.

        • George

That’s why I refer to these christians as “thelogical double-standard hypocrites” .  Plain &  simple !!!!!

  • Macnvettes

If you watch Glenn Beck, he rolls out the videos of Muslims who say comparable things and compares them to Hitler.  Funny he would overlook those who share his same religion, no?

  • George

Well folks , it has been said –“You can’t keep a seriously dedicated man down”  .  Women have a saying–  ” Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned” . Well we men have a saying also and it states  :    ” The most fierce creature on this earth is a man that has nothing else to  lose”.
Please allow me to quote a few excerpts from the book titled : [ THE PILLARS OF RELIGION ;        IGNORANCE, INDOCTRINATION , INADEQUACY ]  by atheist author Jane Kathryn Conrad.
” Institutionalized religion is supported by three   ” I’s ”  :  Ignorance, Indoctrination , and Inadequacy….. Mark Twain wrote about these pillars at the turn of the century but mankind hasn’t made much progress since then where religion is concerned.  Although we are living in the age of knowledge, the pillars of religion have not been toppled. Why ? Amazing amounts of time , effort, and money have been applied by organized religion to maintain the sytem. Efforts of intellectuals to bring enlightenment to the world trapped and imprisoned by the power and influence of institutionalized religion has not been successful.
Only when man has been released from the physical, emotional, and intellectual bondage of institutionalized religion will he have the time and resources to concentrate his attention on eliminating the problems whic currently plague this world of ours. Religion wages an ongoing war to capture our minds and pocketbooks. It ignores the real problems which confronts us: abuse of power by governments , suppression of human rights , poverty , hunger , inhuman wars , abuse by multinational corporations , racial and religious prejudice.
Traditional religions have created great expectations . They have promised that which they can’t give.  Invariably , they fail us. Never has religion been able to demonstrate that the invisible god to whom their members pray can solve the problems of man. It didn’t work in pgan days . It has not worked for monotheistic or polytheistic systems. To the contrary , despite cries of “god is love” and “brotherhood”  religion has been the source for considerable bloodshed , death , destruction , and unhappiness. Nor has the concept of  salvation or life after death been successful as a deterrent to those noxious characters who display aberant behavior in their RELATIONSHIP with others.
Eliminating religion does not mean that there will be a disappearance of morality and ethical behavior . Just the opposite. The root cause for many of our present day conflicts have had  their origins in religion. When there are vast numbers of people whose lives are dedicated to the proliferation and continuance of religious systems , they cannot but help influence the lives of each and every one of us. Even the media is influenced unduly by religion. And dam !   I don’t want my life run by or dictated by people who are eoither ignorant , who have been indoctrinated in beliefs which are based upon superstitition and sheer baloney , or who are so emotionally inadequate that they should be candidates for a psychiatrist’s couch. Do you ?
Religion can also stymie logical thinking in some educated persons preventing them from advancing out of the past.  Church : a laundry for brainwashing. Indoctrination is a polite word for brainwashing.  In the United states , most everyone acquires his sense of religion through the technique of indoctrination. We are taught. Then we strive to fulfill our training.  When you have been taught by your parents and peers to accept without question a particular belief which is in accord with their feelings, teachers at sunday School further reinforce this, the preacher adds his blessing , and before long , you have been trapped. Indoctrination begins at birth. Within a few days there is the baptism ceremony ……………………….
Fear of punishment is a greater force than many people realize. It encourages you to accept the training that is offered. Do what you are told, believe what you are told, never question authority , and God will love you and be good to you.  Religion needs no control. That is the purpose of the indoctrination. religious leaders would  be unable to retain their positions of power and social control if it were not for the blind obedience which results from careful indoctrination. Obediance is not just a matter of habit. It is obtained by fear. Christianity is typical of the religious groups which employ fear as a means of controlling social behavior.  Have you recognized the kids on drugs who have now been turned on to religion ?  Can you recognize why Christianity is always seeking scapegoats to justify its existence ?
Religion much like mythology , has been one of man’s attempts to answer the question of his origin. Religion makes you a slave to an imaginaryu knave ! The advances made by science , logic, and psychology have brought us to the point which indicates there is no suprahuman , supranatural, or supraterrestrial god or gods who created the universe, mankind, or who govern the past, present, or hereafter. faith is a declaration of semantics and opinion.
Without the threat of a hell, a devil , a satan , it would be difficult for any religion to keep such large numbers of human beings in total subjugation. Common sense , once more , should convince you that the very idea of hell is ridiculous.
The time has come for man to shoulder , himself, the responsibilities he formerly gave to God. When he does this, there will be no need for indoctrination, no need for a magical or mysterious suprahuman on whom he can lean to do what he is actually capable of doing himself if he applies his own brain power.

I find it ironic and hypocritical that anyone can advocate ‘freedom,’ ‘democracy,’ a ‘Republic,’ etc., etc., etc. – those terms typically ascribed to American conservatism – and submit themselves to an all-powerful deity that rules their every decision and motion.

  • Ralph

Religious certainty makes you a tool and a slave.
Questions make you human and free..

Off subject, but what are your thoughts on Netanyahu’s visit.

    • Jillian Becker

Waiting in some trepidation, Ralph, to hear what Netanyahu will say in his speech to Congress. And also waiting — actually dreading — to hear what Obama will say in his speech to the Arab World before that.
