Hard thoughts 25

Terrorism is a method. It is not an ideology, or a movement, or a disembodied force on which war can somehow be waged (as per President Bush’s “war on terror”). It is a means, a tactic to achieve objectives which can be of various kinds.

What is the method of terrorism? The use of systematic violence in order to create public fear.

It has been mainly used to attain political objectives (eg. Fatah, Hamas, IRA), religious objectives (eg. the Inquisition, the Salem witch-hunters), commercial objectives (the Mafia), and in modern times the personal objective of self-expression with idealistic pretexts (eg. Ulrike Meinhof, Che Guevara, Bernadine Dohrn, Anders Breivik).

The victims are usually targeted randomly. The deaths and injuries are as atrocious as the terrorist can make them. Randomly chosen victims, whoever and whatever they are, are always innocent in the context of the attack.

There is no actual or conceivable justification for the use of terrorism. It is evil, no matter why it is used and even if it achieves a desirable end.

Acts of terrorism are distinguishable from acts of war. It can be used within the context of war (eg. executions carried out on civilians by invaders as a warning to the invaded).

Communist regimes are terroristic by nature. Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot were terrorists, Castro and Kim Jong Il are terrorists.

All autocracies, such as those of Gaddafi of Libya and Assad of Syria, are terroristic. So are the mullahs who rule Iran.

Is there a test which can be applied to an act of violence (outside of war or democratic law enforcement) to determine whether it is terroristic? Not always, but broadly, yes. If the act makes most people feel less afraid – as when a tyrant is assassinated – then it is not. But , admittedly, examples can be thought of where the distinction is hard to make.

Here is an opinion of the Breivik massacre that is worth thinking about, bearing in mind that the use of terrorism is never justifiable.

Debbie Schlussel writes:

The Norwegian newspaper pictures from the “political youth camp” at Utoya Island, Norway – the day before terrorist Anders Behring Breivik attacked it – say it all. The boycott sign is obvious, and the other pic is a game, re-enacting of the HAMAS flotilla in which terrorists tried to murder Israeli soldiers (complete with Palestinian flags and Norwegian kids’ smiles). These kids who were killed by a terrorist . . . well, they sided with Islamic terrorists.  … The man in the pic happily encountering the boycott sign is Norway’s Foreign Minister Gahre-Store, who went on to praise Palestinian terrorists and condemn Israel.

“Victims” or Perpetrators?: Norwegian HAMASniks Join Norway Foreign Minister @ Utoya Island Camp

Funny how Glenn Beck has come under attack for comparing the camp to a Hitler Youth camp. Based on these pics, seems like he’s spot on, though he should have added, HAMAS Youth camp, too. As we all know, Nazis boycotted Jews and were Jew-killers. And these hateful, privileged brats at the camp boycotted Jews and sided with Jew-killers. I don’t condone violent massacres on innocent civilians, and I condemn what Breivik did. He is a terrorist just like the 9/11 hijackers, Hezbollah, HAMAS, and Nidal Malik Hasan. But what goes around comes around. You support terrorists against innocent civilians in Israel, then you get attacked by terrorists who are upset with your support.

For me, this is like Alien v. Predator. I’m not sad for either side. And I make no apologies for it. Now these kids’ families know what it feels like to be victims of the Islamic terrorists whose Judenrein boycotts and terrorist flotillas against Israel they support. We don’t live in a vacuum. I can’t feel sorry for those who support my would-be assassins. And I don’t get too upset when they face the karma that is their fate. HAMAS isn’t just against Israel, it’s against all Jews . . . and all Christians. Just ask the Christians who’ve had to flee Gaza for their lives. And read the HAMAS charter. I’ll bet that’s something these spoiled airheaded kids with their Boycott Israel signs and HAMAS flotilla re-enactment games never did.

Frankly, the HAMAS charter and HAMAS’ behavior, all of which these kids at the Norwegian HAMAS youth camp cheered on, is a lot more scary than the screed and deeds of Breivik.

My late grandfather, a Holocaust survivor, never shed a tear for dead Nazis. My late father, a Vietnam era Army veteran, never shed a tear for those who supported the killing of Americans and Jews. And I shed no tears for these HAMASnik campers with a Scandinavian dialect. Perpetrators are not victims. Sorry. HAMAS collaborators don’t get my pity. They never will.

The Norwegian ambassador to Israel fails to understand that the method of terrorism is wrong whenever, wherever, and by whomever it is used. He opined that it was good when used by Hamas on Israelis, bad when used by Breivik on Norwegians. Debbie Schlussel is not making the same mistake in reverse by condemning Hamas and excusing Breivik. She condemns Breivik’s act. But the act of terrorism in this case does not appall her as it appalls us. Most of the victims on Utoya Island were young. Their opinions were hand-me-downs from their parents and teachers, not arrived at through experience and reason. Some of them would probably have come to a better understanding of political issues as they matured.

However, our sense of justice is outraged – and our sense of irony overwhelmed – by this statement on the massacre issued by Fatah, the other major Palestinian terrorist group:

It is with consternation that we have received the dramatic news of an awful terrorist attack against a summer camp ran by our comrades of Norwegian Labor Youth, AUF.

Fatah Youth declares its consternation about the terror attack. There are no words to describe an attack against people that have been our comrades in our struggle for freedom and independence. Very few people have stood by our side as much as the Norwegian people, and particularly our AUF comrades.

We know those who have been cowardly assassinated. Those are people that have stood for the human and national rights of the Palestinian people both in Europe and while visiting Palestine.

Fatah Youth has participated for almost 15 years in the same summer camp and our youth has benefited by learning and sharing experiences on democracy and advocacy for peace and justice.

We hope that those responsible for this criminal terror attack will be brought to justice. Such sick minds should not have a place in any society.

As a people that has been victim of state terror for the last 64 years, the Palestinian people and particularly Fatah Youth presents its condolences to the families of those killed and sends a strong message of support to our comrades from the Norwegian AUF as well as from other sister parties that were participating in this summer camp.

Good title, and thanks for the information I hadn’t seen anywhere else. I had no idea what kind of camp Breivik had attacked or why. The nature of the camp doesn’t make what Breivik did acceptable, of course, but it certainly adds vital context to the attacks.

Yesterday I was in the public library and I began reading a feminist magazine. All throughout this feminist print publication was the victimhood mentality of radical feminists engaging in their rabid man-hating rabid male-bashing and asserting that America is nothing but an oppressive nation for women.
This nation ( America ) has opportunity galore for anyone regardless of race, gender, class  or any other.     I wonder why all the silence by these radical feminists regarding all the so-called honor killings” carried out under sharia law.   Where is the public outcry by the radical gender feminists to speak out against women being stoned to death by the most barbaric murderous behavior immaginable under the banner of Islam ?    Where are all the marches , demonstrations and shouting in the streets regarding women who are forced to dress as if they are wearing human tents in public with only cut-out slits around their eyes ?   Where is the public outcry by feminists to speak out against how Muslim women in various Muslim countries  are forbidden to choose who they marry ?   Where is the public outcry by The National Organization of  Witches to publicly denounce sharia law and the true oppression, denigration, subjugation and legal abuse and inhuman treatment of women in many Islamic regiemes ?
How can any sane man engage in such a psychopathic act as an “honor killing ” by killing his wife or daughter and consider such a murderous sicko act as a form of honor ?   It is the duty of a  husband or father to protect his wife and /or daughter from  any and all harm under any and all conditions.   Since when did murdering your wife or daughter  because you’re upset with either become an HONOR ?   What the %$#@ is wrong with this picture ?  Am I missing something here ?  Where is the feminist public outcry regarding this ?  Why aren’t these murderous acts displayed  on television to let the world see the horror and insanity of what is really happening to innocent women.  If a male suicide-bomber gets 72 virgins , then what does a female suicide-bomber get ?  Does she get 72 studs ?    Does she get 72 hunks ? Does she get 72 Chip-N-Dale dancers for her pleasure ? Just wondering .  How can the human species be so gullible ?
How can such an  advanced nation as we have here in America allow a bunch of 7th century people in the Middle East kick our butts when we have a Navy , Air Force, Army, Marines, National Guard,  ICBM’s , cruise missles,  and much more  ? I’ll tell you why. It’s because our rules of engagement have been stiffled ?   Our military might has been handcuffed . Our military arsenal is NOT being used ——-that’s why.    Our political leaders are so freaking concerned about our image in the world and pushing their own personal PC agenda  instead of doing the necessary thing and fighting fire with fire and giving terror to the terrorists.  If we unleashed our military might upon these 7th century throwbacks , they would get the message to not f*** with America , but oh no, we’re so freakin’ concerned about being “politically correct” that we put our nation, our allies and the world in jeopardy. What utter insanity !
This world situation concerning  the jihadists is getting worse by the day and the world had better come to it’s senses for our very survival and continuation of civility and freedom. I will never understand how people who are so advanced that they can produce the most advanced technology and the highest standard of living anywhere be such stupid brainwashed fools and not do what is necessary for our very survival and self-defense . It’s mind boggling.

I was listening to a conservative radio talk show and the show host was speaking about a survey that was made about the conflict between the border area of Israel and the Palestinian gaza strip. A series of questions were asked of the participants and this was followed up by a series of questions on the program itself by “call in ” listeners live.
The primary question was actually a scenario.  The question asked that if you were on a flight in an airplane ( business or commercial ) , and you were for some reason flying the border line between Israel and the Palestininian  border and your aircraft developed engine trouble and the engine quit , would you prefer to make an emergency landing in Israel or the  Gaza strip or did it matter at all.   Now that was the question ( probably not an exact quotation,  but to that effect ).
Every single person ( as reported ) answered that they would only want to make an emergency landing or even crash on the Israeli side of the border line.  The participants stated that they believed if they crashed or had an emergency landing on the Israeli side of the broder , the Israeli people would come to their aid and give them immediate emergency care and humanitarian treatment.  By the same token , they feared that if they had crashed or had to make an emergency landing on the Palestianian side , they would be captured , tortured and imprisoned and chances are high that they would be brutally killed. Every caller that called in stated the same thing. I was not surprised at the results.   I cannot confirm the accuracy of the alleged survey , but this is what was reported ( for you to make your own interpretation ).  I wrote down the date and time of the show and perhaps I may try to get a recorded copy of the show if at all possible.
When I personally asked a few friends and acquaintances the same question ( both liberal and conservative ) they too all gave the same or similar answer. Interesting.

    • Mark

As you said, in the spirit of altruism, the results are always left to interpretation. The stigma is quite clear, though, and it’s answers to dilemmas like that which often provide the greatest clarity. You don’t often see people leaving the U.S to emigrate to other countries in ‘refugee’ fashion (though perhaps more these days); same concept. Spit, fire and rhetoric aside, which side does one feel safer on? Safety seems like a core fundamental to what makes a good place to live. We should try to base more of our political policies on that… *sigh* ideally speaking…

Harold! Sure you are British bigot and antisemit. Your  citations: “Hamas doesn`t like Israel”, “siding with terrorists for promoting boycott”-this boycotting terrorists,Israeli soldiers with the paint guns are “heavily armed”.Pal`s well known hate of Israel is the “racist approach”. I see here your racist approach,Harold

Odd things are happening to some readers when they try to post comments. (Like George’s name appearing at the end of a comment by Harold.) Some have been unable to get their comments posted at all. We apologize, are looking into what’s going wrong and will try to fix it.

    Sorry about that error, George!

Ha ha —no sweat .    Was just sorta puzzled .    Thanks

  • Joszaruba

The young people were first indoctrinated and then murdered. We should feel sorry for them, because as the author says, the  young person is easily persuated to a stupid oppinion. I  feel sorry for them, because many of my fellow schoolmates were in the communist youth, I was not there only because my parents forbade me to enter – but I was just one in the class. (I am from the former Eastern block).
Another thing that is anoying in Norway attack –  it is the traditionally European and self destructive  “Crusader mysticism”. This crusader mysticism is something very disgusting on Breivik’s personality. These heroic mad actions have been  always unfortuate. As a christian I admit that this is one of the very bad parts of christian heritage.  Various psychopats have already participated on destroying of Byzantinum, so the Turks got the Byzantinian empire already disemboweled and skinned. The crusaders have often made mad actions, conquering the holy grave with lot of effort and a little success – they have been a sort of European jihadists.
Norwegian culture is unfortunately traditionally worshipping this cult – the awful northern mythology combined with christianity, admired by Wagner, Munch, Grieg, and now a sort of pop-wagnerianism – see the link below.
Norwegian Black Metal that is very popular among young people.
The conservative politics is partly involved in this myth, because they do except this myth of holy war. War should be just a technical thing. Worshipping of men who fight for the west with a sort of holy enthusiasm is stupid. watch the modern pop-wagner culture of Norway.

    • Andrew M

You seem like a good man of reasonable conscience with more life experience than me, and I’m glad you deplore the historical uses of Christianity as a vehicle of terrorism (I almost said war there, but then I remembered the salient intro to this article).

This being said, I urge you not to confuse the vehicle of black metal with its underlying ideology, the latter being a problem and the former being a neutral cultural expression. I unabashedly listen to Finnish Viking metal, which incorporates motifs from Kalevala, the country’s national legend. And I cannot say it has whipped me into a frenzy of pagan idolatry against all who deny the cult of Ilmatar; it just piqued my interest in Finnish (pre)history.

And none of this changes the fact that Western values are absolutely worth our proud, unwavering defense whenever they are challenged within our borders – recognizing parallel Sharia courts in Australia, scamming innocents and their wallets with Scientology, and the frightening rise of antediluvian Christian fundamentalism in this country – these all insult the dignity of the Enlightenment values which power our advanced civilizations and should be squarely opposed. The freedom to bash on guitars connected to overpowered amplifiers does not qualify, and in fact represents the most vaunted freedom of all – individual liberty.

      • Joszaruba

I do not mind that someone likes to listen to it, I like Wagner and it does not make me Nazi – I just say that the terorist atack, how he dresses as a knight, that  is a cultural thing with a long tradition.  Many christians liked to be heroic knights who defended  the holy grave . This sort of passionate mad heroism is also happening to many atheists, when they defend their point, because they are within the christian way of thinking.

Most of thigs are  just a sort of culture – including enlightment, which is a sort of Christianity without god. To see it as an oposition to christianity and not just as another sort of faith is also nonsense. and to see politics as completely rational and independent on beliefs of the people. The Americans are raised in the myth of divison of the sate and faith, which is also a sort of virtual or mythical structure created by historical circumstances.

  • Harold

First your comment: You describe Fatah as “the other major Palistinian terrorist group.”  Well, according to Wikipedia, Fatah is not currently considered a terrorist organisation by any major government.   You have  grouped all palastinians as terrorists, and negated any statement they may make as worthless.  This strikes me as a racist approach.

You state that “he opined it was good when used by Hamas on Israel”, and then give a link that says no such thing.  Please tell me where he says it is good for Hamas to commit terrorist atrocities.

I find it hard to grasp the level double standards displayed in the quoted article.  The youth at the camp are described thus: “hateful, privileged brats at the camp boycotted Jews and sided with Jew-killers”.   The Norwegian youth are portrayed as “siding with Islamic terrorists” for promoting a boycott of Israel.   This can be entirely humanitarian and does not require support for terrorists.  Equally, protesting against Israel is not quite the same as the Nazis did 60 years ago.  Many Jews also protest against their governments policy.    Portraying the “Hamas” flotilla in which “terrorists tried to murder Israeli soldiers” is just a bizarre reading of that situation – after all, who were heavily armed  and who did the invading?  Is it not possible to be against Israeli policies without wanting to kill all jews?

Hamas are an aborrant organisation, they also don’t like Israel.  However, that does not mean that every disagreement of Israeli policy is support for Hamas.

      Harold,

Fatah is the militant wing of the PLO.  The world’s  pretense that the PLO  is the representative of the Palestinian people does not convert its leaders into statesmen, nor their terrorism into legitimate foreign policy.  The Palestinian bosses will never give up the “resistance” – which is terrorism, the killing of civilians to promote terror.  In this they are no different from Hamas, their  rivals for power (the control of aid money).

All Palestinian bosses make statements for western consumption and contradictory ones for domestic consumption.  That contradiction and their deeds make their statements worthless.  Their intention is clear in their charters.  Neither the PLO nor the Hamas charter have been altered, despite talk about doing so by their embarrassed apologists. Their intention is also clear in their actions: the continued rocket attacks, kidnapping, attempted suicide bombings, murders.

As for the Norwegian ambassador: the link quotes his statement that the “cause” of Palestinian terrorism is the “occupation”.  This is simply another way of saying   the Palestinian “resistance” is justified, and its chosen methods (terrorism) is justified.  He approves of terrorism against Jews.

Are anti-Israeli actions “humanitarian”? There is good evidence that the Mavi Mara flotilla incident was provoked by an organization which supports Hamas. The militants of that organization were prepared to martyr themselves in the attempt to kill Israeli soldiers.  Calling them “volunteers” does not make them humanitarians, any more than calling Abbas “President” makes him a statesman. The humanitarian aid they brought, by the way, included out-of-date medicine.

I am skeptical that any “anti-Israel occupation” movement – including boycotts of Israeli products, services or human beings – is genuinely “humanitarian”. That word has now come to be code for the new form of anti-semitism.  Israelis are once again being made into non-humans – as are no other people on this planet.  They are demonized and delegitimized for forbearing to do the very immoral actions that their enemies actually do, boast about and receive approval for by the Norwegian labour party among others.

Yes, there are many Israeli leftists who agree with those that Israel should be destroyed by stages, if not by obliteration by an Islamic bomb. They give cover to humanitarians who want to avoid being called anti-semitic. Jews, of course, can be anti-semitic too. The new anti-semitism is an ideology, not an emotion. And I would say that Arabism, Palestinianism, Islamism – promoting the annihilation of the only Jewish state – are a continuation of Nazism.

The Schlussel view is a hard one. She does not express pity for the lost lives.  She views the young people as carriers of ideological poison which threatens her.  She does, however, express intellectual outrage. That is not a double standard: she condemns the killing of the Norwegian children as she condemns the killing of Israeli children, despite her feelings. Which is more than the Norwegian ambassador, whose sympathy is as selective as Schlussel’s, could bring himself to do.

She writes: “But what goes around comes around. You support terrorists against innocent civilians in Israel, then you get attacked by terrorists who are upset with your support.”

My reading of this is that if the Norwegians accept terrorism against the Jews – or any people – then they must expect it against themselves – or anyone else.  In fact, Breivik did not commit an act of terrorism because the labour youth were in favor of boycotting Israel.  He killed in the name of a theatrical fantasy of European culture.

Actually, the entire incident was not about Israel.  If it was about anything other than one individual’s criminality, and many individuals’ terror, pain and grief, it was about western hypocrisy and intellectual decay. Breivik’s act was a manifestation of that, as were the Ambassador’s statements.

You hate anti-semitism.  good, so do I.  However, by lumping all palastinians and those who decry their situation as terrorists you are gulity of something similar towards the palastinians.  I do not think Fatah has sent rockets into Isreal recently.  That is Hamas.    The minister identifying the “cause” as the occupation may be  right or wrong, but it is not justifying current terrorist actions and is not expressing approval of terrorism against Israel.
Whatever actually happened in the flotilla, it is unarguable that Israel is imposing a blockade in the Gaza strip.  This blockade is resulting in severe shortages.  It seems quite probable that a group of young Norwegians could sympathise with the palastinians suffering shortages without having any anti-semitic feelings at all, and certainly without wishing all jews dead.
You say “Israelis are once again being made into non-humans – as are no other people on this planet”.  I say that the Norwegian campers demonstrated no such thing, but the attidudes expressed here show that the palastinians are coming close to being the people on this planet closest to being treated that way.

        • George

Hello Harold ——- I have a question . Why do you have my user name at the end of your post at the lower left bottom ?  It asked for my profile when I clicked on and had listed posts of mine.  Can someone please explain this to me ?  I asked the question 19 hours ago as well.   What gives ?     What’s that all about ?  Explain please !!!

        • Hello everyone,

George’s name is at the bottom of Harold’s post because Harold tagged George (perhaps accidently) in his post. If you type @ followed by someone’s name, the tag appears. See:

In responding to a post on another forum about some barbarous beliefs and actions by a family in Afghanistan I wrote the following:”You can put lipstick on a pig but it’s still a pig. You can give technology to these brutal savages but they are still brutal savages.”Now imagine that you are part of the crew of a ship from an advanced civilization visiting earth. Considering humanity as a whole and all of the things going on here on planet earth would you even consider giving us access to advanced technology? I sure as hell wouldn’t!!

I have strong reason to believe that  there is life on other planets and I certainly hope that there is , because this planet is in such dysfunctional shape , it’s pathetic. I remember the movie   [ The day the earth stood still ].  The visiting humanoid alien said upon arrival that as long as we earthlings were warring among ourselves they didn’t care on the other planets. But since earthlings had now attained the ability to venture into outer space and visit other planets , they feared earthling humans would bring their warring and barabaric ancient behaviors to other planets which posed as a threat and also a clear and present danger to other planet civilizations and therefore earth was destined to be destroyed if the situation continued.   I understood the premise and theme of  that movie.  It was a classic.
These earthly religious zealot brainwashed barbarians would simply take advanced technology and use it to engage in mass murder and mahem on a broader and more devastating scale.  It certainly would not be used to advance world civilization.  These are some dangerous times that we now live in and the zealot religious kooks are emboldended and are spreading like wildfire and they have a mission to convert the planet in it’s entirety.   If people worldwide don’t  put aside their petty differences , stand up and fight back and unite together —————– we’re doomed !

I just read a newspaper  article titled— ” Fleeing Somalia tells horror story”  by Malkhadir M. Muhumed. It tells the story of a somali man fleeing Somalia with his family and he had to leave a child behind with a relative,  his 7 year old son died of disease and starvation, Muslim militants raped his wife before him and he was approached by a lion at night and scared it away with a flashlight.  It goes on and on. I can’t imagine the horror these people suffer daily. We have it so good here in America and yet we won’t stand up and speak up against the encroaching jihadist movement that wants to take us back into the 7th century with a ruthless and barbaric culture.    Somalia is a small African nation run by Muslim thugs and ruthless militants.   There is absolutely NO freedom whatsoever.
Here we are , the USA with a massive military arsenal and armed forces and we let a bunch of 7th century throwbacks hijack our ships at sea and force their murderous agenda upon the rest of the world. It’s crazy.    Of course , with Obama in the presidential seat ,we certainly won’t be fighting back as we should .  We have no true leadership anymore. Our leaders have failed us.  The reason these worthless so-called leaders got into power in the first place is by deceit and making worthless and lying promises and also because of the ignorant & gullible citizenry voting them into office.
One terrorist expert stated—-  ” We have the ability to stop them but we do not have the will” .  Political correctness will destroy us. Our ultra-tollerance could very well spell our doom.  These militants are using “stealth jihad” tactics to position themselves into various government positions to incrementally take over worldwide and yet stupid fool politicians and brainwashed citizens allow it and swallow it —hook , line and sinker.  Gullible “suckers” worldwide don’t realize how they are being “played” by the jihadists who are  engaged in a worldwide movement to turn world society under sharia law rule.
How much more are people going to take ? What is it going to take for people to wake the %$#@ up ?  What else has to happen before people get a clue what is happening here ?   How can supposedly intelligent and educated people be so hoodwinked, bamboozled, conned, shammed, brainwashed, tricked, deceived,  and played for utter fools in such  advanced societies ? Where is the public outrage ?  Where is it ?  Show me !

I heard a conversation on a radio program which stated that Breivik had gotten to the “breaking point” and mentally “snapped”  when he saw his country being taken over by Muslim immigrants trying to transform and take over his country and he also observed how some of the  supporting camp members supported the Palestinians and condemmed Israel.     Breivik  ( who appears to be a radical nationalist  ) went “off the deep end ”  and declared himself    a  vigilante ” matyr.  In his mind , it appears as though his  mindset  was to fight  terrorists and their supporters  with vigilante counter-terrorism .
It was also stated by some that  this sort of thing  happens when people psychologically  ” lose it” ,    and take matters into their own hands.
