A surprising surprise 13

The offices of French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo have been destroyed by a petrol bomb, a day after it named the Prophet Mohammed as its “editor-in-chief” for this week’s issue.

We quote from the report in the Telegraph:

The publication, historically famous for pillorying Catholic clericalism, was criticised by Muslims in 2007 after reprinting the Danish cartoons of the prophet Mohammad that caused outrage around the Islamic world.

It was let off lightly that time with mere criticism. Did the editors think they could get away with expressing themselves freely against Islam again, in Islam-infected France?

If so, for satirists they are strangely naive.

They announced that their next issue was to “fittingly celebrate the victory of the Islamist Ennahda party in Tunisia” by asking Mohammed “to be the special editor-in-chief.”

“The prophet of Islam didn’t have to be asked twice and we thank him for it,” the statement said.

The cover of this week’s issue, out on Wednesday, shows Mohammed saying: “100 lashes if you don’t die of laughter”.

It also includes an editorial by the Prophet entitled Halal Aperitif and a women’s supplement called Madam Sharia.

Behind the humour, the editorial’s message is serious: “No religion is compatible with democracy from the moment a political party representing it wants to take power in the name of God”.

The Ennahda party pretends it can and will preserve freedom and democracy  – under sharia law. It deserves mockery.

“What would be the point of a religious party taking power if it didn’t apply its ideas,” it goes on. “Hello, we are the Bolchevik party and if you vote for us we promise never to speak of Communism… Come on.”

We are surprised that they were surprised by the firebomb attack.

We are surprised that politicians were shocked (if they really were).

Xavier Bertrand, the labour minister, said he was “deeply shocked” while Jean-François Copé, head of the ruling conservative UMP party said if the fire was linked to this week’s issue, “it serves as a reminder of what kind of acts can be committed by fundamentalists who manipulate religion for political ends”.

But some hastened yet again to exonerate Islam itself – that “vast majority of peace-loving Muslims” we hear so much about but never hear from: –

Jean-Luc Melenchon, presidential candidate for the leftist Front de Gauche party called the attack “repulsive”, and called on the French “to the have the intellectual discipline not to confuse a handful of imbeciles, numbskulls who will severely punished, I hope, with the vast majority of our Muslim compatriots who practice their faith perfectly calmly“.

They sure are letting themselves in for many more shocking surprises!

  • I only half-heartedly agree with everyone here on this issue.  I ABSOLUTELY cannot stand it when I hear stories about how people DIE because of cartoons that offend muslims or from a statement that is offensive to islam.  That is absurd, and should rightfully be condemned.  Sometimes I think the only path of action is to eradicate islam altogether.

The only thing that makes me think otherwise is putting myself in their shoes (peaceful muslims).  There have to be some out there right?  If I was just sort of a half-hearted muslim who went to mosque once in a while, but mostly was just working and taking care of my family most of the time, would I have the balls to stand up and shout against the fanatics?  I don’t think I would.  The fanatics have shown that they will happily kill other muslims as well, and I wouldn’t want to risk my life or my family’s lives.

But then I think how impossible it is to root out only the fanatics, and I am back to “just get rid of the entire religion” again.  After all, islam has a virtual monopoly on religious violence (I know there are some exceptions).  And I have heard the convincing argument that there are no moderate muslims.

I am flip-flopping here, I know.  But, I just wanted to state that I don’t think it’s totally fair to condemn the non-violent muslims.  After all, for them, speaking out could be a death sentence.

      Flip flopping is absurd.

      Their religion is wholly irrational.

The name of their religion means ‘submit’.  If you wait to quit flip-flopping and fail to identify them for what they are, it is your loss, most assuredly, and those you love.  How much more evil from their side do you need to see to that the non-violent musslimms use the same stupid ‘holy’ book which demands that infidels be converted or killed.  It is not some three-thousand year old primitive text like the old testament.  It is eight hundred years newer than the new testament.
Failing to judge evil as evil is a very foolish compromise.  When good compromises with evil, evil gains and good loses.
Our forefathers two hundred and forty some years ago were aware of possible death sentences for disagreeing with the British crown.  When good people won’t fight, history shows that they die a worse death.

The fact that the majority of Muslims can “practice their faith perfectly calmly” while their fellow Muslims blow people up in the name of Islam, proves that there is something seriously wrong with them. If they were really concerned about people outside of their religious bubble, they would be doing something about it.  But they don’t really care, because, conveniently, non-muslims deserve to die anyway, so it’s no big deal to them. Sharia law is better than secular law, so why worry about separation of mosque and state?  It’s so much easier to let the Imams do all your thinking for you, anyway.

As long as there are willingly violent jihadists who will blow stuff up to set things right when moohammed is offended, then the rank and file (or rank-smelling and filthy) musslimms can sit back and enjoy hearing the multicultural wackos referring to them as peaceful.
The whole lot of them are sick, based on what they admire as their so-called ‘holy’ book, and as long as they are at war with me, I’m at war with them.  If they ever learn humor and tolerance, and burn their qurans and de-burka their women, then maybe I would back off.  Not a minute sooner, though.

      Well put!

    • George

Damn right !   Ditto !  Semper Fi !!!!!!

  • Don L

Unfettered by fallacious of christian guilt:  round ’em up; ship ’em out…rawhide! (franky lane quote…LOL!)

  • George

When did the world stop using common sense ?  Can someone please answer that for me ? Political leaders around the world have become suicidal and pathetically foolish and STUPID !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As a result , they are putting us all in jeopardy.

Western leaders are neither ‘western’ in ideology, nor ‘leaders’.  They are tools, with the US Prez being a huge evil moron.

      • George

Now now Cheonghyei , don’t go comparing the Prez with morons.   Morons have more intelligence and sense  and that is an insult to morons because Obama is NOT up to their level. Now please apologize Cheongyei to all the innocent morons out there who are offended by that.    We don’t want to upset the morons by bringing the Prez up to their level.    I think I’ll go have a beer tonight and then post a message from the bar and wait for Don L’s response.

        • Don L

That’s what I’m about to go do too!

        • George and Cheongyei, I really wish Obama was a moron.  I think he is a “relatively” smart man with an evil agenda.  (I say relatively smart because it totally annoys me when the media calls him “brilliant.” Do they have any evidence for how “brilliant” Obama is?)

I heard Hannity once say that he thought Obama was actually MUCH more radical than he can come off in the public eye.  I am convinced that Hannity is right.  The way Obama is playing class warfare and all his other political jockeying (“balanced approach” BS)  shows us that he loves his power and control more than he cares about the country.  He is completely taking advantage of the current down economic cycle to push toward his socialist ends.  In the end, I think his vision for this country is that the USA should become socialist like Europe, or possibly even more so.

Oh, how I wish he was just a moron… instead of a scheming, insidious, a$$hole.

          In reply to PareshK  :

Paresh , I actually heard liberals say they voted for Obama because he will give them this & that , etc.    They get the hand-outs and live on the government dole and let other people fund their lives at others  expense.   How could these foolish white liberals vote for a man that sat in the pews of Rev. Jeremiah Right for twenty years ?   Then we have foolish blacks who voted for Obama for no other reason than his ethnicity.   Both groups are utterly STUPID !!!       Dammit  , how can the human race be so f***ing  BRAINWASHED  ?
