Where atheism is a crime 6

Alexander Aan has been sentenced to 30 months imprisonment for denying the existence of God.

This is from the MailOnline:

An Indonesian man was jailed for 30 months after writing “God doesn’t exist” on his Facebook page.

Alexander Aan, 30, was imprisoned on Thursday for sharing explicit material about the Prophet Mohammed online.

He started an atheist group on Facebook on which he shared comic strips of the prophet having sex with his servant …

He was found guilty of “deliberately spreading information inciting religious hatred and animosity”, presiding judge Eka Prasetya Budi Dharma told the Muaro Sijunjung district court in western Sumatra.

Aan also uploaded three articles on his Facebook account, including one describing the prophet being attracted to his daughter-in-law.

“Under the Electronic Information and Transactions law, we sentence him to prison for a length of two years and six months,” Dharma said. “‘What he did has caused anxiety to the community and tarnished Islam.’

Caused anxiety to the community? The sensitive community beat him up.

Aan was beaten by an angry mob and arrested by police in his hometown of Pulau Punjung in western Sumatra in January after posting the material online and declaring himself an atheist.

“Tarnished” Islam? What could possibly be said about this cruel, primitive belief-system that would make Islam look worse than it is?

The court had earlier indicted Aan with two other charges – persuading others to embrace atheism and blasphemy. …

But the court convicted him of the most serious charge and dropped the other two. …

Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation, guarantees freedom of religion in its constitution and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, but only recognises six faiths: Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Catholicism, Protestantism and Confucianism.

And what it doesn’t “recognize”, it won’t tolerate.

Its courts have in recent years given light sentences to perpetrators of violent attacks on Christians and Islamic minority Ahmadis, some of which have been fatal.

Has anything made by man caused as much hurt and grief as religion has done and continues to do?

At one point the Muslim world went through its golden age while the west went through its Augustine dark age. Time will tell if Christianity will mimic what Islam did and retreat from reason to barbarism. I hope not. I am optimistic that internet has been a game changer by making information virtually free. Clerics and communists cannot control facts anymore. Christians cannot either.

    • Unless they gain control of the internet, which they tried to do with SOPA. If that ever happens, we will truly be screwed! Sites like this will cease to exist under laws like SOPA.

      Christian “reason”?

      What? How? Who?

  • IMO, religious people need to be put on anti-psychotics, because anyone who believes an invisible being created the Universe are certifiably insane.

Extremely gullible and easily manipulated.  Lying (to ourselves and others), which also seems to be such an intrinsic part of human nature, makes the hypocrisy of religion very easy to transmit and maintain!  As long as everyone agrees with the lie, the truth can easily be ignored.

I agree with you Liz and also with Robert.   The overall problem is compounded by the fact that the religionists (theists) control the mainstream media and are the ones overwhelmingly in control of the government power structures around the world.   And as such , they control via censorship what people  see, hear, read, and follow . Mind control is what leads to behavior control and this is what is so intrinsic in the global cultures and societies  and what also  permeates our society here as well.
We as secularists overall are not completely without fault as well for not standing up more , speaking out publicly and getting involved in a truly pragmatic sense to overcome and fight back against these powers  of subjugation. Many secularists talk rationally and may even think rationally but the do not ACT rationally in their actions and deeds and continue to “hide in te proverbial closet” out of fear .    If the women’s movement, civil rights movement and other ethical movements had taken the [ hide in the closet ] approach to the situation and nothing else but ALK thene all the gains that have been made would have NEVER occurred .  It took bold and gutsy people to step out and take risks ( some dangerous at times ) but necessary to overcome the subjugative, oppressive, and exploitative powers at large.
The civilized world needs a global “grass roots movement” to stand up to these attrocious and horrific acts and human rights violations and also the  terror  & mayhem. It will NEVER change with only LIP SERVICE to one another ONLY.   We do indeed need to discuss these matters and engage in dialogue to come to suggestions for improvement and true civil change but the uncivilized , barbaric and savage world will simply ignore this and continue to carry on with business as usual seeing as how they have no one on any grand scale to oppose them.  They therefore become emboldened  to continue on unstopped.     I’m sure you have heard the famous statement by Edmund Burke that reads something to the effect —    “All it takes for evil  to survive is for good people to do nothing” .   Unfortunately , I hate to admit it , but those famous words have even fallen upon deaf secular ears as well. This is why the [evil] continues –unstopped.
Rational thinking MUST be followed up by rational action and deeds or the mere thoughts in itself will amount to absolutely NOTHING .This is why globally we are still getting our butts kicked .
