Neither party wants to recognize Islam for what is. They would rather ignore Islam because it might cause a violent confrontation. Much like England and France didn’t want to confront Nazi Germany because it might lead to war. Violent, irrational people must be confronted as early as possible to avoid a major war.

They take the cowardly approach and capitulate to them , thinking that it will win them friendship with the  Islamists . They are deceived and delusional.  Instead of ‘nipping things in the bud” at the very beginning when thay have a great chance of winning , they prolong the matter and allow the enemies of freedom and reason to build up their arsenal and their  ” propaganda machines ” .  The real problem is also the fact that we have inept wimpy people in political power and they are putting us all in a very grave position that threatens our very survival and future.   Even the people that know what needs to be done won’t speak out and speak up publicly.       Such profound silence could very well lead to our societal downfall and ultimately to our doom.   Discussing  to one another may help vent our feelings but won’t change anything in a pragmatic sense. It’s good to discuss these events and express our viewpoints but this in itself is not truly enough . In addition to our “fraternal” discussions on these matters —we need to step outside of the “box” and let our voices be heard in the mainstream media and in the public ‘square”  and also to our political representatives non-stop.   WE are on the right track in bringing these issues to the forefront , however also we need to take it one step further  and write letters to the editor in major newspapers and magazines , call, fax and/or e-mail  our political representatives , speak up at public events and stand up to the proselytizers whenever possible.  If we lose and don’t exercize our freedom of speech now , the chances of ever regaining   such will be slight chance to NOT happening !

I’m so sick of the religious right obfuscating the facts, as this cartoon depicts.  They opened the door for this by first violating the separation of church and state themselves with the “faith based initiative” thing.  Now Muslims are benefitting from it, but they must ignore that because it would threaten their pet project, and lead back to them as the guilty party.
It’s the same thing with the contraception flap – the whole problem arose to begin with because the Catholic church was recieving federal funding.  But again, the religious right cannot acknowledge that obvious fact because it doesn’t fit in with their agenda.  So they, and their prominent major talk-show host representative, simply ignore and obfuscate the facts of the matter so they can demonize the left for violating “religious freedom”.  They don’t even understand that they themselves created that violation by violating it themselves to begin with –  Aaaargh!!!
Their idea of religious freedom, then, is really a return to a pre-constitutional, state sponsored religion, with a supposed”toleration” of other religions.  This sounds familiar – like a Sharia state.

      Hi Liz —
The exception Liz  is that when it comes to members of my ethnic group , it’s sad to say that people like Al Sharpton , Cornell West , Jessie  Jackson and their ilk are in my opinion members of the RADICAL RELIGIOUS LEFT  and are pro-Democrat Party ultra-liberal left-wing promulgators  . There is absolutely NOTHING conservative or right-wing IMHO about them and yet fundamentalist Christianity is in the forfront of their mindset and  agenda.   Another sad situation isn’t it ?   We’re catching it from from the right and left.

Yes, this is another sad consequence of political/religious demagoguery.  People like Jackson and Sharpton manipulate public opinion just like Limbaugh.  And the real issues get lost and go unsolved in the process.  If there were someone in their positions of prominence rationally expounding on the facts about separation of church and state, instead of taking advantage of peoples ignorance of it, we wouldn’t have the problem to begin with. But they profit off the controversy, so why help anybody understand it or solve it?

        • George

Absolutely Liz.      Getting back to the above illustrated cartoon ,  not only do we need   ” separation of church and state ”   but we also need ” separation of mosque and state ” . Also to that list we can add  ” separation of temple and state ” and “separation of synagogue and state ” —or for that matter just simply say — ” separation of house of worship and state ”  just to be all inclusive.   When religion mixes with government we all suffer –except the theocrats that instituted the mixture in the first place.

The thing that really puzzles me is the fact that atheists aren’t going around engaging in any act of terrorism anywhere but we are the most hated and despised group in America just because we don’t embrace a belief in the supernatural or paranormal. Just because we don’t embrace indoctrinated organized dogma of superstition and mythology people overwhelming in America detest us and act as if horns are growing out of our heads.  It’s astonishing and mind-boggling that people have been so duped and mentally hoodwinked .  These brainwashed individuals actually believe that WE are brainwashed just because we prefer to believe in reality , rational thinking, reason , facts and scientific analysis and inquiry.   Just because we prefer to THINK and question everything , we are loathed and denigrated to an infinite extent.  Atheists aren’t going around engaging in any acts of terrorism but we are the proverbial scapegoats of such behaviors. Atheists aren’t going around subjugating or enslaving people but we are the ones blamed for what other people do. Atheists aren’t the ones engaging in a global attempt to take over the world and proselytize the entire planet with our secular beliefs of reason and reality but we are the ones who people vilify, malign and mock virulently.  Atheists aren’t the ones telling people if they don’t accept our secular beliefs that they are going to be punished in an afterlife eternally or murdered for secular blasphemy.   Think about it ——— the religious zealot nut-cases carry out the acts of murder , mayhem , destruction , and venemous hate-mongering bigotry and  atheists become the target of blame.   Religious zealots can carry out all forms of attrocious behavior and they get a free pass , and yet when we as secular freethinkers point it out , we (atheists) become the target of hatred and it’s then OPEN SEASON on atheists.  What’s wrong with this freakin’ picture ?
